Abstract
This study was undertaken to detect changes of localization and activity of fibronectin, a glycoprotein molecule, in hair follicle by developmental stages of rats. The experimental animals (Sprague-Dawley rats) were divided 6 groups, a control group (adult male rats), 18 day fetus, 20 day fetus, 1 day newborn, 3 day newborn and 7 day newborn as experimental groups. To obtain the data for distribution of fibronectin in the extracellular matrix of hair follicle and in the cytoplasm of hair follicle cells in anagen stage, we used immunohiscological stain method with use of gold particle. The results obtained were as follows. 1. At 18 day and 20 day fetal stages, large amounts of fibronectin-immunoreactions are seen in the extracellular matrix of hair follicle and scanty in the cells of hair follicle. 2. The hair follicle cells of newborn rats showed small amounts of fibronectin-immunoreactions in the cytoplasm and nucleus. There was few fibronectin-immunoreactions in the extracellular matrix of hair follicles of newborn rats. It is suggested that the majority of fibronectins in extracellular matrix of hair follicle in fetal rats are not secreted form follicular cells, but in newborn rats, fibronectins in hair follicle are mainly secreted from hair follicular cells.
